Homework has many functions: it communicates to parents what we are learning in class, it reinforces what students learn in class, it teaches students responsibility, and helps them to develop good study habits.
Homework is also a link between school and home. Studies show your child's success is directly related to the partnership between home and school. Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their child. Therefore, I ask that parents make homework a top priority by providing a quiet homework environment, setting a daily homework time, providing praise and support, not letting their students avoid homework, and by contacting me if there is a problem. I also expect parents to sign where indicated to acknowledge completeness and neatness of the homework.
Homework in second grade consists of three components: 1) a language arts packet 2)a math page and 3) a reading log.
Language arts packets will be distributed on Friday (or the last day of the school week) and are due the following Friday. I know the weekdays can get very busy and this allows your child the weekend to get a jump start on the homework if needed. If a student is absent on Friday, the packet is expected the day the student returns to school.
Math homework is assigned daily Monday-Thursday and is due THE DAY AFTER it is assigned. For example, if math page 12 is assigned Monday it is due Tuesday.
Reading Logs will be distributed on Friday (or the last day of the school week) and are collected on the following Friday. Students are expected to read Friday (or any day over the weekend) and Monday -Thursday for at least 20 minutes per day and fill out the reading response log.
Homework will impact grades if not completed consistently. In order for a student to possibly receive an "O" in work habits on their report card, they may have no more than 5 incomplete assignments.
